Professional Background
I studied a four-year Bachelor of Health Sciences degree, followed by a two-year Master of Health Sciences in Chiropractic at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. After graduating, I moved to Scotland and began my career at a chiropractic clinic in Banchory, prior to joining Garioch Chiropractic.
Alongside my university studies, I completed a number of additional courses to broaden my practical skills, including sports massage and muscle release techniques, sports injury taping and sports performance taping.
Why Garioch Chiropractic?
It was to have the opportunity to learn as much as I could from a very experienced and well-educated chiropractic team, and which added to the motivation was that the clinic has an exceptional reputation for being patient-centred, which is what I feel is one of the most important edicts in chiropractic care.
Clinical Approach/Interests
Assessing a patient is very similar to building a puzzle, now instead of having cardboard pieces I have joints muscles and ligaments. To know what to treat I must first find out which parts of the body aren't working properly and what kind of stimulus I need to introduce to the body or joint to have a beneficial effect in function and pain reduction. Once the main issue which is causing the pain has been relieved, the next step in my treatment protocol would be to try and find out if there was maybe an underlying cause which could have led to the initial pain.
I particularly enjoy helping patients with back and neck pain, headaches, sports injuries, postural issues and persistent musculoskeletal conditions. I also have a strong interest in preventative care and helping patients maintain long-term mobility.
Advice & Education
Chiropractic treats a wide range of conditions that involve the musculoskeletal system, and that it doesn't always have to be neck and back pain. We allow natural movement of the human body and improve quality of life, which ends up having a larger effect on mood and sleep and general wellbeing.
There is a lot of mystery about chiropractic: I do understand people being nervous about getting an adjustment as it requires a lot of trust from you in the chiropractor, which is why as students, we study 6 years in total to perfect the art of adjusting, after graduation we keep improving this skill by attending additional adjustment and technique classes and workshops and staying up to date with modern research.
